This course builds on the knowledge, understanding and skills that you have gained at GCSE. It constitutes an integrated study with a focus on language, culture and society. The focus is on how the French society has been shaped, socially and culturally and how it continues to change. You will learn to express yourself at an advanced level and discuss social and topical issues. You will also learn to analyse a film and a literary text in French. Finally, you will develop your translation skills, from French to English and English to French.

You will be taught grammar throughout the course to develop your accuracy and your translation skills.

You will study one book and one film and will be able to write about them in essays.
- Individual Research Project
The aim of this project is to develop research skills. You will demonstrate your ability to initiate and conduct individual research by analysing and summarising your findings, in order to present and discuss them in the speaking assessment.
- Paper One: Listening, Reading and Translating
What is assessed? Theme 1, 2, 3 and 4
How am I assessed? Written test (two essays) and a translation into French. It counts as 40% of your A Level.
Duration: 2 hours 40 minutes.
- Paper Two: Writing and Translation
What is assessed? Your knowledge of the literary text and the studied film, including grammar.
How am I assessed? Written test (two essays) and a translation into French. It counts as 30% of your A Level.
Duration: 2 hours 40 minutes.
- Paper Three: Speaking
What is assessed? Your independent project and understanding of one of the topics
How am I assessed? Oral exam. It counts as 30% of your A Level.
Duration: 21-23 minutes, including 5 minutes preparation time.
- MFL Event at Manchester MET University
You are invited to take part in a day of lectures and seminars to experience what studying Languages would be like at university. French, German, Spanish, Italian and Arabic are but a few of the wide array of courses offered on the day.
- MFL Event at Leeds University
As part of the Linguastars programme, run by the MFL department at Leeds University, you can partake in discussions and workshops on foreign cinema, taster workshops for new languages, linguistics, interpreting and essay writing.
- School Ambassadors
We run a series of extra-curricular events, including local primary schools and information evenings for younger years. You represent each language at these events and lead or partake in pre-organised activities in order to inspire and enthuse younger linguists! Past activities have included a Spanish market, a European treasure hunt and singing in German.
- Staff Support
As part of the Sixth Form Graduation Programme, you are invited to Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 lessons to be a role model for future linguists. You will assist in classroom activities and provide one to one support. Not only do the younger students benefit from peer support, but Sixth Formers have appreciated having the opportunity to work as a team with the teacher and support younger students, both of which are key skills for a successful progression reference.
